At least five people were wounded, one seriously, in a weekend shooting outside a Safeway supermarket in the Outer Richmond neighbourhood of San Francisco. Police are investigating.
Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 9 pm Saturday found multiple victims near the store, the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement. A man with life-threatening injuries and four juveniles with non-life-threatening injuries were rushed to hospital.
Police Capt. Kevin Lee told the San Francisco Chronicle at the scene that the shooting stemmed from a fight. There were no arrests and investigators did not immediately release suspect information.
“A fight broke out shortly before 9 p.m. which resulted in the shooting. So far we have five victims that were transported to San Francisco General Hospital,” SFPD Capt. Kevin Lee said on the scene.
“This kind of violence does not represent who we are as a city, and we will never tolerate it,” San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement.
The shooting sent bystanders scattering. Tommy Corcoran, 19, told the Chronicle that he was walking through Golden Gate Park near the beach when he heard what sounded like a car backfiring, then a flurry of gunfire, and suddenly saw everyone scattering, some running toward the Safeway.
Corcoran slid behind a log and tried to hide, losing his phone in the process.
“I’m gonna get home,” he said.
Detectives urged witnesses or anyone with information to call the police department.
