The official X account of popular Sesame street character Elmo was hacked on Sunday resulting in a series of offensive and antisemitic messages that shocked many social media users.
The account, which has over 640K followers, posted multiple hateful messages, including calls for violence against Jewish people. In some posts, it referred to President Donald Trump as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ’s “puppet'. Another post demanded Trump to release the Epstein documents.
The account also replied to several users with similar offensive language. All of these posts and replies were later deleted.
In a statement to Fox News, a Sesame Workshop spokesperson confirmed the hack, saying: “Elmo’s X account was compromised today by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts. We are working to restore full control of the account.”
The incident drew widespread reaction from the netizens. Some users mocked the situation because of the shocking adult language coming from a children’s character account. One user commented, “I’m forever scarred by Elmo.”
Representative Jared Moskowitz tweeted, "See what happens when you defund PBS".
Sesame Street has faced increased scrutiny in recent months as some Republican lawmakers have pushed to cut federal funding for PBS. In May, Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at ending federal support for the public broadcaster.
Last month, Republican lawmakers called to defund PBS after the television station’s long-running children’s show, "Sesame Street," celebrated LGBTQ "Pride" Month on social media.
