Amazon has announced that Prime Video content in India will include "limited advertisements" beginning June 17, 2025, with the company offering an opt-in ad-free experience for an additional cost of Rs 699 per year or Rs 129 per month, on top of the Amazon Prime subscription. This is the discounted price, per Amazon’s email to customers, the original cost of the add-on plan is listed at Rs 999, however, the company not disclosed till when this pricing will remain available.
In an email sent to subscribers, the company stated that the change would allow the company to "continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time." Amazon says that viewers would see "meaningfully fewer ads than TV channels and other streaming services."
The full email from Amazon reads
"Dear Prime member,
We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting June 17th, 2025, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than TV channels and other streaming services. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership.
We will also offer a new ad free add-on option for an additional ₹699 per year/ ₹129 per month* that you can sign up for starting on June 17th 2025."
Current Prime memberships, which cost Rs. 1,499 per year in India, will remain unchanged in price but will now include advertisements. The Prime subscription includes benefits such as fast delivery options, free shipping, cashbacks on select purchases, and access to other Amazon services including Prime Music , Prime Gaming, and Prime Reading .”
This move follows Amazon's earlier introduction of advertisements in Prime Video content in other markets, including the US, UK, Germany, and Canada in January 2024, where users paid an additional $2.99 per month for ad-free viewing. Amazon, earlier this week, told that it’s add-supported tier now has a subscriber base of 130 million in the US.
Amazon also offers a more affordable Prime Lite plan in India priced at Rs 799 annually, which limits Prime Video content to mobile devices at 720p resolution. According to the company, users on the Prime Lite plan, which already includes ad-supported content, will not experience any changes.
