In a remarkable turn of events that left cricket fans both surprised and delighted, Italy has officially secured a spot in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Their qualification came through a strong campaign in the European Qualifiers, where the Italian team demonstrated skill, determination and resilience.
Italy’s opening match saw them confidently chase down Guernsey’s total of 122 in just 14 overs, with Justin Mosca leading the charge with a blistering unbeaten 66 off 37 balls. On the bowling front, Harry Manenti played a crucial role by picking up three wickets for just 17 runs, ensuring a smooth seven-wicket win to kick off their campaign.
Their next encounter against Jersey, however, was impacted by rain. The match was washed out and both the teams shared points in what was expected to be a decisive fixture in the group standings.
Undeterred, Italy delivered a stunning performance against Scotland in what turned out to be a defining moment of their qualification journey. Emilio Gay made an impressive debut, scoring a solid 50 that laid the foundation for a competitive total of 167. Manenti once again proved instrumental, this time taking his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 internationals with figures of 5 for 31. Italy held their nerve to defend the target, sealing a 12-run victory and a historic win over a well-established side.

With this achievement, Italy becomes the 13th team to qualify for the 2026 tournament. They join other confirmed participants such as hosts India and Sri Lanka, and top teams including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies and the United States, all of whom had advanced to the Super Eights in the previous T20 World Cup. Pakistan, New Zealand and Ireland have also earned automatic qualification based on their T20I rankings.
Italy’s qualification also comes alongside the Netherlands, who clinched their spot as the 14th team. That leaves six more spots up for grabs, which will be determined through ongoing regional qualifiers. Two of those places will come from Africa, one from America and three from the Asia/East Asia-Pacific region.
Italy’s success in the European Qualifiers has not only made history for the nation but also added an exciting new chapter to the global cricketing narrative, proving once again that the spirit of the game knows no boundaries.
