Salmon is a popular food for Brits in every season, but it is often considered a particularly summery dish. Its taste and pairing opportunities make it a good option for a light meal when the days are hot. But depending on how you prepare salmon, it can be a wholesome autumn and winter meal. It is all about the ingredients you use when you cook this delicious fish. One expert has advised people to make one swap when cooking salmon in colder weather.
Brits have been feeling the chill over the past couple of weeks as temperatures have plummeted. Heating is switched on, and in the kitchen, hearty, warming meals are made for families looking for comfort after coming in from the bitter cold outside. This normally comes in the form of things like a steaming hot stew or classic favourites like bangers, mash and gravy. Salmon is another simple yet delicious option, and it is actually important to eat more of it in winter because of its high Vitamin D content.
Instead of making salmon with citrus, which is one of the most common ways to serve it, you could consider other dressings to make it a staple of your autumn and winter cooking. Because its health benefits are too good to miss out on in the colder months of the year.
Mimi Morley, senior recipe developer at food box delivery company, HelloFresh, suggested ditching lemon and using soy sauce. She said: "You don't need to give up lighter proteins the second summer ends. The trick is to treat them differently. In fact, salmon works amazingly well during colder months if cooked properly and paired with the right ingredients.
"The nutritional benefits from salmon are ideal for the time of year. It's packed with omega-3s and vitamin D, which are great for those darker and colder days."
She added: "Autumn ingredients naturally do the heavy lifting. Citrus adds brightness, but autumn is all about warmth and depth.
"A sticky honey and soy salmon or a glaze made from maple syrup and mustard works beautifully. You can also try brown butter with a touch of sage for a richer flavour."
She added: "A pinch of smoked paprika or ground cumin can add warmth without overpowering your salmon. You only need a little to make the flavours feel seasonal and balanced."
