Former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos has urged Manchester United to consider a move for Inter Milan's seasoned goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

With less than three weeks left in the summer transfer window, the Red Devils are still open to bolstering their goalkeeping options before the September 1 deadline.

As previously reported by the Manchester Evening News in January, head coach Ruben Amorim is keen on bringing in a shot-stopper who can provide stiff competition for Andre Onana for the coveted No. 1 spot.

Onana, who missed out on United's pre-season due to a hamstring injury, was under scrutiny last season for a series of high-profile blunders, raising doubts over his position as United's first-choice keeper.

Despite returning for pre-season training last month with the expectation of retaining his top spot and showing no desire to leave Old Trafford amidst rumours linking him to AS Monaco, Senderos believes his Swiss compatriot Sommer, 36, could bring much-needed experience to Amorim's squad.

"I think Yann Sommer is a very, very experienced player and a calming presence," Senderos shared with BoyleSports. "He makes the defence better because of that presence.

"I can't really judge Andre Onana in this situation, but if United were to target Yann Sommer, I'd really believe he'd add invaluable experience.

"It's about how he is as a person, how he is on the pitch. He's a great character and amazing in what he brings to a defence. We've seen it with Inter Milan and Bayern Munich the year before."

Sommer, set to celebrate his 37th birthday in December, signed for Inter in August 2023, stepping into Onana's shoes who had transferred to Old Trafford just weeks prior.

The shot-stopper, who hung up his international boots last year, made 53 appearances for Inter during the previous season, boasting an impressive 22 clean sheets. He was also a key player in their journey to the Champions League final, missing only one match.
