Kyle Walker is reportedly set to join Burnley in a surprise move that will provide Manchester City with a financial boost. The veteran defender is tied down at the Etihad Stadium until next summer but has been deemed surplus to requirements. He spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, making 16 appearances in all competitions.

A permanent exit has been on the cards for some time, with Walker having slipped down the pecking order at City. Earlier this year, he spoke of his desire to play regular football in the hope of reigniting his passion for the sport. Now, the left-back is about to spring a massive surprise by joining newly-promoted Burnley.

Walker is set to undergo a medical at Turf Moor before signing a two-year contract, according to The Athletic. Burnley are said to regard the potential signing as a 'significant coup' given Walker's pedigree and wealth of top-level experience.

The deal could reportedly be worth up to £5million to City when performance-related bonuses are taken into account. They will also save around £10m in wage payments, with Walker still believed to be among their highest earners.

His arrival at Burnley will add quality, leadership and experience to their squad as they go in search of Premier League survival. Clarets manager Scott Parker already knows him well, having played alongside each other at Tottenham between 2011 and 2013.

Walker is set to become Burnley's fourth signing of a busy summer window. They have already brought in Axel Tuanzebe, Quilindschy Hartman and Max Weiss since the end of the previous campaign.

Bashir Humphreys, Marcus Edwards and Zian Flemming have also completed permanent moves to Turf Moor following the end of their respective loan spells.

Walker previously admitted that he was forced to have an uncomfortable chat with Pep Guardiola after falling out of favour at City in the middle of last season.

Speaking after his temporary switch to AC Milan, the defender said: "When I spoke with Pep, it wasn't a very comfortable conversation, mainly because of the respect we have for each other. What he's won at Manchester City, I've won it too.

"I like to think he knows what I bring to a dressing room, the atmosphere I create. City was my family, from the cooks to the cleaners, the kit men and physios.

"I like to think I was liked and helped everyone blend in, but things weren't going well there and I wasn't playing enough football. Hopefully I can play a bit more here."
