Jannik Sinner and Darren Cahill have hinted that the Australian tennis coach may backtrack on his decision to leave the world No. 1's team at the end of this season. Cahill previously announced that this would be his last year on the tour with Sinner, with whom he started working with in 2022.
But after the Italian won his fourth Major trophy at Wimbledon, Cahill refused to answer questions about his future. And Sinner has now revealed that he had a bet with his coach, meaning the Aussie's fate was in his hands.
Cahill is one of Sinner's two coaches alongside Simone Vagnozzi, but he was set to leave at the end of 2025. However, the 59-year-old teased that he would be sticking around after watching his charge lift the Wimbledon trophy.
"I don't want to answer this," he smiled when asked if he'd changed his mind. "You know what, you just need to ask Jannik that. Ask Jannik. Are you guys going to be in the press conference with him? God bless you."
And Sinner was happy to share the details of their unusual agreement when he addressed the media a couple of hours after beating Carlos Alcaraz 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.
"It depends if I want to tell the truth or not. We made a bet before the final, I told him that if I won, I could choose whether he could stay or not at the end of the year. Now the choice is mine!" he joked in Italian.
And Sinner seems keen to keep the Australian tennis coach on board, even if Cahill takes a minor step back.
The world No. 1 added: "I've always looked for an honest person who gives me a lot not only on the tennis court but also in life outside, both in success and in disappointments. He's fantastic at that.
"If I choose to stay with him, he probably won't travel as much anymore, that's normal. I've always told him that in Australia I'd like to have him, because things are going well.
"Then the season is still long, there are still many tournaments, and I'll see him many more times... But I won the bet, now we'll see."
For now, Sinner, Cahill, and the rest of the team have plenty of celebrating to do. The newly-crowned Wimbledon champion said: "Yeah, it feels amazing.
"The tournament I always dreamed of just playing and to be part of. And now sitting here with the trophy, even if it's not here, it's amazing. So, yeah, amazing feeling."
