Jamie Carragher is among those to have paid tribute to Diogo Jota after the Liverpool forward was killed in a car accident alongside his younger brother. The forward, 28, was reportedly travelling in a vehicle when it went off the road, causing a fire. The incident is said to have taken place on the A-52 in the Spanish province of Zamora, near the town of Palacios de Sanabria.
It comes just two weeks after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Portugal. The couple share three children together. Jota's brother Andre, 26, is also reported to have died in the crash. The news of their deaths has shocked the sporting world and plenty of tributes have been flooding in on social media.
Carragher wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Devastating news about Diogo Jota and his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with every one of their family and friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids."
Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic posted a picture of himself alongside Jota on his Instagram story, with the caption: "You will be remembered my friend."
Many clubs also posted tributes to Jota after Liverpool confirmed his death, with Manchester United saying: "Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today's heartbreaking news."
Everton said in a statement: "Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this sad time."
Raul Jimenez, who played alongside Jota at Wolves, added: "It's hard to receive this kind of news and I still can't believe it. An excellent colleague, friend, and above all, a great father. Thanks for everything, my friend. We'll always remember you."
Ruben Neves, another former Wolves team-mate, said: "They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you!"
