Berhampur: A major head and neck cancer resection surgery was successfully performed at the SUM Hospital in Berhampur.
A 69-year-old male patient, diagnosed with carcinoma of the right buccal mucosa involving both jaws with cutaneous extension and severe trismus, underwent a technically demanding bite composite resection with neck dissection, according to the hospital.
The extensive defect was reconstructed using a forehead flap, ensuring both cancer clearance and functional restoration.
The procedure, which lasted over six hours, was challenging due to the advanced stage of the tumour and severely restricted mouth opening.
The patient has been recovering well post surgery, which was completed without intra-operative complications. He has been shifted from the ICU to the ward.
The surgical team, led by Dr Sairudra S. Puhan, Consultant in Surgical Oncology, also comprised Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr Sudhakar Jena, Anaesthesiologist Dr Subhajit Sahu, Critical Care Specialist Dr Pratyushkanti Mishra and Dr Priyanka.
Deba Prasad Dash, the Director, congratulated the team of doctors and the entire OT staff, and said that the hospital was now equipped to provide comprehensive cancer care with medical oncology and chemotherapy services already operational for the past six months.
