Strinesdale Reservoir tragedy as woman dies after getting into difficulty

A woman has tragically died after getting into difficulty in a reservoir in Manchester.

Emergency services were called to the Strinesdale Reservoir at around 4pm on Sunday. A rescue mission was launched by the river, which is situated on the A62 between Oldham and Delph.

The fire services specialist water incident unit was deployed to the scene. Following an intense search, Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a woman's body was later recovered at around 6.25pm.

In a statement on Monday, the force said: "Emergency services responded to an incident at Strinesdale Reservoir at around 4:50pm yesterday (Sunday 17 August 2025) after reports of a woman getting into difficulty in the water. Sadly, the body of a woman was recovered. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death."

A cordon was erected at the scene. Strinesdale is known for its reservoirs, woodlands and meadows surrounded by farmland. The beauty spot is home to a large range of local wildlife and features several fishing spots.

No further information surrounding the incident or the identity of the victim has been released at this time.
