Progressing on its plans of international expansion, IndiGo announced further strengthening of its fleet by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus to double its wide-body order from 30 to 60 A350-900 aircraft. The airline will four domestic and 10 international destinations in the current financial year.
In April 2024, IndiGo decided to induct widebody aircraft in its fleet by placing a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 70 aircraft. On Sunday, the airline announced to enlarge its wide-body aircraft order by converting 30 aircraft, of its purchase rights for the 70 aircraft in 2024, into a firm order.
The MoU was signed between IndiGo and Airbus on Sunday at the 81st annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Peter Elbers, the chief executive officer of IndiGo said that the delivery of these aircraft will start in 2027 and will continue till the second half of the next decade.
At the press briefing on Sunday, Elbers said that the airline in the current financial year will expand its operations to four new domestic destinations, including Hindon, Adampur, Navi Mumbai and Noida, taking the total number of domestic destinations to 95. Similarly, it will add 10 new international destinations, including Amsterdam, Manchester, London, Copenhagen, Siem Reap, Athens and four in Central Asia, taking the total count to 51.
In March 2025, IndiGo began preparing for its long-haul operations with the introduction of six temporarily leased wide body aircraft, deliveries of which will be concluded by 2026. the long-haul operations will be carried forward by IndiGo’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft. These will be powered by Rolls Royce’s Trent XWB engine to offer an unprecedented optionality and reach as it embarks on the next stage of its wonderful journey of addressing the rapidly evolving needs of the Indian market and our nation.
