Raksha Bandhan 2025: The festival of Raksha Bandhan, celebrated on the day of Shravan Purnima, is a symbol of the sacred love of brother and sister. On this day, the sister performs aarti of her brother and ties a rakhi, a symbol of love, to him. The brother also blesses the sister by giving gifts. The history, scriptures, method of making rakhi, and the importance of this festival, which has been going on for thousands of years, have been explained in this article compiled by Sanatan Sanstha.

Mythological story related to Raksha Bandhan
In Patala, Lakshmiji tied a rakhi on the hand of King Bali and made him her brother and freed Narayan. That day was Shravan Purnima. The war between Indra and the demons continued for twelve years. Twelve years of the gods were like twelve days of the demons. Indra was tired, and the demons were becoming dominant. Indra was preparing to run away from the war to save his life. Knowing this, Indrani went to Guru Brihaspati. The Guru meditated and said, “If you take a vow with the power of your devotion to your husband that my husband should remain safe, and tie a thread on Indra's right hand, then Indra's victory is certain.” Indra won, and Indrani's vow was successful. According to Bhavishya Purana, Raksha Bandhan was originally meant for kings, and since then, the tradition of tying Rakhi has been going on.
Emotional significance
A sister ties a Rakhi on her brother's hand so that the brother prospers and protects the sister; this is the feeling behind this festival.
Method of tying Rakhi
Raksha (Rakhi) is prepared by tying rice, gold, and white sugar candy in a cloth. It is tied with a silk thread, and this mantra is recited:
"Yen baddho bali raja danavendra mahabalah.
Ten tvampi badhnaami raksha ma chal ma chal."
Meaning- With the same Raksha with which the mighty king of demons Bali was tied, I tie you. O Raksha! You remain steadfast.
Why is there a tradition of tying rice grains with a silk thread?
Rice is a symbol of all-inclusiveness, which includes everyone. It is capable of exchanging all waves. Tying rice in a white cloth and tying it with a silk thread on the right hand of the being in the form of Shiva creates a sattvik bond. The silk thread is the leader in accelerating sattvik waves.
What kind of feeling should a sister have while tying a rakhi?
When blood was flowing from Shri Krishna's finger, Draupadi tore the pallu of her sari and tied his finger. A sister cannot see her brother suffering any pain. She can do anything to protect her brother. Every sister should have this feeling while tying a rakhi.
Importance of giving sattvik gifts by the brother
Raja-Tama dominated things are asattvik, so a sattvik gift should be given by the sister to the brother, such as a religious text, japamala, etc., which helps the sister in her sadhana.
Pray
The sister should pray for the welfare of the brother, and the brother should pray for the protection of the sister. Both of them should pray together, “Let us try to protect the nation and religion.”
Prevent insulting gods with Rakhi.
Nowadays, rakhis have 'Om' or pictures of gods and goddesses on them. Removing the rakhi from the hand after tying it and throwing it here and there is an insult to gods and religious symbols. To avoid this, immerse the rakhi in flowing water.
