If you are travelling by train at night, then this news is very important for you. Otherwise, you may get into trouble during the journey. Before sleeping in the sleeper or third AC, check the chain on the berth properly. If it is not properly fastened, it may open and fall, and you may get injured. A similar case has come to light in Tamil Nadu, in which a female passenger was injured. In this regard, the railway has appealed to the passengers.

According to Indian Railways, in the Chennai-Palakkad Express train number 22651, female passenger Suriya Murugan was sleeping on lower berth number 1. At around 1:15 in the night, the empty middle berth suddenly fell. This injured the woman. She suffered a serious head injury. This accident happened after crossing the Jolarpet station. Her husband, Jyoti Jaishankar, was travelling in another coach in the train. The nearby passengers informed the husband. He sought help from the TTE and railway employees. But first aid was not available immediately. According to the husband, the TTE said that help will be available after getting down at the next station, Morappur. But it was difficult to get down in an unknown place at night. The wife was bleeding continuously. We had to wait for about one and a half hours to reach Salem station.

First aid was provided in Salem.

At 2.40 am, the wife was taken to the government hospital by ambulance at Salem station for first aid. However, later she was taken to a private hospital by an autorickshaw, where stitches were put on her forehead. The husband said that he did not get any help from the railways during the journey. He complained that there was no first aid box on the train, so that he could get immediate treatment.

Indian Railways said the locking system was fine.

Indian Railways says that the locking system was checked at the next station, Dindigul Junction, and it was fine. The investigation revealed that the last overhaul of the middle berth was done in Chennai in March 2025. In this regard, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Ministry of Railways, said that the accident seems to have happened due to the passenger not locking the berth hook properly. The coach is 19 years old, but was found fit to run in testing. Railways also said that medical help was arranged in Morappur, but the passenger refused to get down there. Due to this, treatment could not be provided.

Old coaches are being replaced.

Indian Railways is replacing ICF coaches with LHB. Its work has already started. 154 old ICF coaches are running in the South Central Zone, which are being replaced with modern LHB coaches. They will likely be replaced soon.
