This time, BSc Zoology has a tremendous choice of students in Delhi University. After BCom and Political Science, it stood third, beating English (Hons).
The course choice of students in the first round of admission season 2025 at Delhi University (DU) has surprised everyone. While BCom (Hons) remains on top as usual with 48,336 first preference applications, BSc (Hons) Zoology has made a huge jump to the third position.
According to reports, this year 12,722 students have declared this course as their first choice, which is a record in itself. What is even more interesting is that Zoology has beaten the traditionally popular English (Hons).
Political Science (BA Hons Political Science) stood second with 15,295 first choice applications. Last year the top three included B.Com (H), English (H) and Political Science (H), but this year the entry of Zoology changed the game.
Why did the demand for Zoology increase?
According to Prof. Rita Singh, head of DU's Zoology department, this change has not come suddenly. The Covid pandemic has changed the way students think. All important aspects like immunity, vaccine, genetics, PCR in life sciences are related to zoology. During the pandemic, students realized that the future of this field is very strong.
Research opportunity in NEP became an attraction
The interest in zoology has also increased due to the option of research project in the fourth year under the New Education Policy (NEP). Prof. Singh said that now it is not limited to the biodiversity of animals only. Students are now also learning how physiology connects to environmental science, and how biotechnology, medicine and zoology are interrelated.
Changes are visible in the thinking of students
A final year student of BSc (Hons) Zoology said, "My love for nature and animals started with books, which deepened by watching environment-related videos on YouTube. I have always been a fan of people who raise their voice for animals. I love field work because I feel that work should have both meaning and joy."
