NCERT Textbook: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made significant amendments in the Social Science textbook of class 8th. These changes include various examples of religious intolerance during the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal rule. In the revised text, Babur has been presented as a harsh and aggressive conqueror, while Akbar's image has been described as a mixture of both tolerance and harshness. At the same time, Aurangzeb has been described as a ruler who demolished religious places like temples and gurudwaras.
Along with these changes, a warning note has also been added to the book, which states that no one should be blamed today based on events of the past. No official statement or clarification has been issued by NCERT yet on the reasons behind these amendments. However, it is clear that the new material attempts to present a particular point of view along with historical facts.
Space given to examples of religious intolerance
The book includes examples of religious intolerance of that time. Attacks on temples and educational centers, looting of villages, and military campaigns have been mentioned. These events have been presented as a "dark period" of history.
Attempt to avoid controversy: Warning in the book.
However, the book also gives a clear warning that no one should be held responsible for the events of the past today. This attempt is to ensure that students do not create social tension by connecting the past to the present.
Now, this information about history will be taught only in class 8
Earlier, the history of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals was taught in class 7, but now it has been included only in class 8 according to the new curriculum structure. This change has been seen for the first time in the first social science book released this year, 'Samaj Ki Khoj: Bharat Aur Uskhe Aage'.
Changes in the chapter titled 'Reconstruction of the Political Map of India'
This chapter covers the major political changes that took place during the 13th to 17th centuries. It discusses in detail the rise and fall of the Delhi Sultanate, the Vijayanagara Empire, the rule of the Mughals and the resistance against them, and the rise of the Sikhs.
This new presentation is different from the old books
The new book openly shows the critical analysis of the policies of the rulers, as well as their religious policies and military actions. These issues were not given much emphasis in the old syllabus.
